Cook (Portland, OR USA)
First of all, the delivery was a day or 2 sooner than expected. I spent allot of time on line researching heart monitors before purchasing. I wanted to make sure I purchased a heart rate monitor that would work in an athletic club, i.e. spin class, therefore the Digital monitor was the way to go. I also wanted the monitor to be easy to use and read. I had it narrowed down between the Pulsar and the Timex, as both appeared to be Digital and easy to use. I chose the Timex due to the fact that you can change the batteries yourself vs. sending it back to the manufacturer. I have used the watch about 5 days/week during exercise including running, biking and even group classes in the gym. It has worked great! I am very happy with the purchase.

"Timex T5H881" 2009-10-20
By Paula Y. Holmes (Kansas City, MO)
I read the reviews and thought what if it doesn't work. Took the plunge anyway. Best plunge I ever made. Had it for about a month. I have no regrets. The HRM is easy to set up. The manual does not go into great detail, but you get enough to get going and if you are a quick study it's pretty easy. BY ALL MEANS READ THE MANUAL. The cost was a steal when compared with other sites. I use mine at least twice a week and it works very well. I use only the watch in chrono mode to time my daily walk on my lunch break at work. I stay in my zone, which I customized myself. It tells me how long I was in my zone and how fast I recovered as well as the total calories (requires chest strap to be on and watch in chrono mode). The calories are a bit exaggerated, but the HR is dead on. I am sorry that it does not save the workout totals to a log, but you can always write it down. Helpful hint- Use plain old tap water to make it work. Just a wet your fingertip and smear it on the chest strap, put it on and TA DA! I love it, and yes it is more of a girl size watch, but you guys can strap it to your machines like I do and get all the benefits without people looking at you funny. It won't display on my home elliptical like I hoped, but that's what the strap is for. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

"Excelent" 2009-10-16
By Sergio Pereira (Venezuela)
It arrived the day before my first 10K race! I used it ("violating the rule: thou shall not try anything new the race day"), and it helped me to keep a good pace so i could finish the race without exhausting myself.

Pros:

- Affordable

- Easy to use (could use it the first time without reading the manual).

- Easy to maintain (cleaning the watch and sensor, washing the band).

- I find it very accurate, doesn't make jumps in the readings (i have compared it with the manual count: 15sec

x4 at rest; 6sec x 10 during training). I feel i can trust in the numbers the hrm shows.

- Review option is a nice feature, it shows a summary of your training, time and avg heart rate during

each interval.

- Indiglo feature is nice and good enough to read the watch in the dark (I use to jog at dusk, after work

hours).

Cons:

- None that i've noticed, so far. The only thing could be the repeated pressing of 'mode' button to pass between different features, but nothing i could get accustomed, not big deal.

Now i would like another device to, say, know the distance i run during my training sessions (as a begginer, I run a little more than 4mi, 4 times a week), to avoid using my car to clock the distance. Of course, that could be done using a GPS. Until now I'm using a pedometer, but i would like a more precise instrument. I'm considering some of the Garmin options... But until now, i'm very happy with my choice. I recommend this watch to anyone who wants to keep his/her heart in the appropiate bpm zone while training!

"Great training watch" 2009-10-15
By Michael C. Foster (Danville)
I bought this watch to help me train and keep track of my progress (i.e. - split times, heart rate, calories). It works great and the buttons are easy to push. My previous training watch was a Timex (I lost the old one) so the functions are familiar. I really like the 'Review' screen and the information it provides on my workouts. I was hoping that the watch would be slightly lager than it actually is.

"Excellent fitness tool" 2009-10-07
By Norma (Miramar, FL)
This watch is perfect for someone who is serious about their fitness. I always wondered whether I was training to hard or not hard enough. Well this watch is perfect for monitoring your heartrate, knowing if your training in the appropriate zone and calorie expenditure. The concept of "intensity training" by heart rate swept the athletic world in the eighties. By the 1990s, individuals were looking to heart rate monitors not only for performance training needs, but also for achieving everyday fitness goals. Today, the same concept of heart rate training is being used by world-class athletes as well as everyday people trying to lose weight. Polar is the leading brand among consumers, coaches, and personal trainers worldwide and the company is committed to not only producing the best products, but also being the leading educator on the benefits of heart rate based exercise.

Similar Products

Customer Reviews

"Good basic model." 2010-01-10
By Jaime Serrada (Caracas, Venezuela)
This is a good choice for a woman that want to measure her basic exercise improvement. Everything is very simple to understand, and set up. The unit is attractive looking, and highly accurate (you can see your HR rise the moment you start moving), with enough real features to keep you motivated, and actually put it to good use either in the gym or on the road.

One thing I've since discovered, is that Polar HRM's are much easier to use than some other models (check a few manuals online to see for yourself). The F4 is very simple: simply enter some initial data (age, sex, weight), and then put the strap on (wet the reverse with some tap water) and you're ready. Click the start button. The unit has useful exercise views (duration, time in zone, calories, avg heart rate, max heart rate) which you can cycle through with a button press as you work out. Once finished, you view an exercise summary screen, which displays all this information. The data is then added to a totals file (which can be reset at will -- ie: at the end of the week).

All in all, this is perfect for a beginner. It does enough for it to be useful for a couple of years, before you will want to move onto something more complicated. Don't spend £150+ on a HRM first time; try something like this and make sure you need extra features. This worked like a dream for me, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a simple (but effective) heart rate monitor.

"great product!" 2009-12-10
By T. It gives a complete picture of how you interact with every portion of your run.

Forerunner 405 comes in two color options — black or green

Train with a virtual partner

Watch Results
Loaded with serious training features, Forerunner 405 continuously monitors your time, distance, pace, calories and heart rate (when paired with heart rate monitor). Each run is stored in memory so you can review and analyze the data to see how you've improved.

The high-sensitivity GPS receiver sustains satellite reception, whether you’re tackling a trail or jogging through the urban canyons of skyscrapers. The Forerunner 405 is water-resistant (IPX7) and can be used outdoors or indoors (with an optional foot pod), making it the ultimate year-round, all-weather training tool.

Forerunner 405 is available with or without a heart rate monitor (see the versions tab) to help you make the most out of your training. Versions with a digital heart rate monitor continuously track heart beats per minute. Train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performance on the same run.

The revolutionary patent-pending touch bezel on the face of the watch makes navigating the options easier than ever. Simply by tapping, holding or running a finger along the bezel, runners can begin a new workout, access their training history or challenge a Virtual Partner. The Forerunner 405 makes training with a Virtual Partner easy and efficient. Runners can adjust the Virtual Partner’s pace without stopping in the middle of a workout, and the Virtual Partner is always on and ready for a challenge.

Run, Sync, Store and Share
One of Garmin's most ambitious decisions has been to approach fitness devices as a total platform with their "ANT + Sport" connectivity system. All of Garmin's new fitness devices, including the Forerunner 405, Edge 605 and 705 bike computers, and Forerunner 50 heart rate monitor watches, will interface wirelessly with any devices that are compatible wiht the "ANT + Sport" protocol, including devices from other manufacturers.

Once you’ve logged the miles, the ANT+Sport wireless technology automatically transfers data to your computer when the Forerunner is in range. No cables, no hookups. The data’s just there, ready for you to analyze, categorize and share through Garmin's online community, Garmin Connect or optional Garmin Training Center software. You can wirelessly send workouts from your computer to Forerunner, too.

Share Wirelessly
With Forerunner 405 you can share your locations, advanced workouts and courses wirelessly with other Forerunner 405 users. Now you can send your favorite workout to your buddy to try, or compete against a friend's recorded course. Sharing data is easy. Just select "transfer" to send your information to nearby units.

Cross-Train
Take your training inside with the versatile Forerunner 405. Pair it with an optional foot pod to track your speed, distance and running cadence indoors when a GPS signal is unavailable. This new design clips onto your laces for easy removal and automatically turns on when you start moving. You can also add a speed/cadence bike sensor to track the speed and distance of your cycling workouts.

Be Part of A Community
In 2007, Garmin acquired Motion-based, the largest shared repository of customer-generated gps-based routes, courses and maps. This was a significant move for Garmin to support the gps user community and bring a wealth of route options to gps users. With a simple connection to your computer, you can join a worldwide network of cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts through Garmin Connect our new, one-stop site for data analysis an sharing.

You can also upload to optional Garmin Training Center software for further analysis. Garmin Training Center stores large quanities of workout and ride data. Some of the things you can do are

Review your workout data, including pace/speed, distance, time, calories burned; and if available, heart rate, cadence and detailed elevation.

View a detailed graph of your workout data, plotted over time or distance.

View a map of your workout that shows the exact path you traveled.

Categorize your workout history according to type of activity.

Review previous workouts, which are saved by day and week.

Create customized workouts with specific goals and rest intervals. Then send them to your fitness device.*

Schedule workouts for a specific day with calendar.

Get custom workout templates designed by the experts at TrainingPeaks.com

What's In The Box
Forerunner 405, USB ANT stick, Heart Rate Monitor, AC adapter, Charging clip, Owner's manual, Quick reference guide

Similar Products

Customer Reviews

"Read all reviews (bad and good), still 5 stars" 2010-01-13
By J fin
First off, i want to say i read almost all of the reviews because $250+ is a lot to spend in the blind.

I always read the worst reviews first, that is how i am, and i was very worried about this product. In the end it comes down to this; the people who wrote the 1 star reviews had no idea how to work their watch, and if they did, well, then i guess programming a watch during a run is a hobby of theirs. I will hit on all of the topics i found discouraging and write what i have found to be absolutely amazing.

First; The biggest complaint BY FAR is that the bevel doesn't react very well, if at all while wet. This is true. BUT, first the person using the watch needs to understand the bevel. The bevel is very sensitive to touch, there is no audible or palapable clicking, just touch, that is it. They complain that when it is wet, or you sweat, you cannot use the bevel, i do not disagree, it is almost impossible to use the bevel when it is wet, (i live in the seattle area, it is always wet when i run). Caveat to all of that, YOU DO NOT NEED TO TOUCH THE BEVEL WHEN YOU RUN! If anyone can think of a reason to touch the bevel while you are running please tell me. This is the botom line; the watch has a program that you can set up to scroll (program called auto scroll on the watch) through three different pages/interfaces as you train. the three interfaces are- heart rate, pace, distance+time+pace, and you can set it up the scroll through these pages fast, slow or medium WITH OUT TOUCHING THE WATCH!!!!! What else, while you are running, would you want to do????!!!! I can understand and relate to the runner who wants to program their alarm for the next morning while they are on a 5 mile jog.....wait, no that is sarcasm. If you are into programing your watch while you run, then this product is not for you. It is called OPERATOR ERROR, and yes, i hope some of these dopes that wrote their comments read this. This product is amazing. One thing i haven't delved into is knowing the exact time of day as i run, i don't think i can know this without using the bevel (but i haven't looked into it, so i will not state that it is an impossability! HINT HINT)

So GPS features, are outstanding, i was using google earth religiously before i bought this and still do. I plan my routes via google earth, i hate running under 5 miles. Spot on. period. yes it takes a minute, not 5 minutes, but a minute to find the satellites....hmmmmmm.....all gps' are like this, no? Give me a break, not only does it do all of it's features perfectly, but it has an awesome program that tracks all of your workouts on your computer and makes the after workout that much more enjoyable.

Before this watch i used a $20 dollar cheapo, big upgrade, but worth it all the way

Bevel locking system is great

Whole product is top notch

"Very happy with watch, but maybe I have modest expectations" 2010-01-11
By G. Lombardo (Pleasantville, NY)
I have been using my watch for almost a year. I have overall been very happy with it. When I run in my neighborhood, I like to vary my route a lot. Also, I want to be able to run anywhere while still knowing my distance. The watch allows me to do both. For example, I recently dropped off my 6 year old at a birthday party in an area that I didn't know. I and was able to sneak in a run while he was at the party. Because I had my watch, I was able to know how far I ran.

I usually lock the bezel when I run, and so I've stopped having problems with moisture or with accidental touching of the bezel when I pull up my sleeve to check my time mid-run.

Customer support wait-times have been long (>15 minutes) each time I call. Interfacing with the website took a few calls to customer support, but it seems to be working just right now.

After about 10 months, I just broke my wrist strap. They're sending me a new one, covered under warranty. I don't know how much a new strap would cost, but 10 months doesn't seem like a long time for the band to last. I should mention that I use my watch as my everyday watch.

I have had a few issues with major issues with accuracy, but they are rare (ie, rate of 1 in 65 runs), and sometimes it takes more than 5 minutes to get a satellite reading (1 in 20 runs). So, now I just make sure I have the watch search for satellite while I'm loosening up pre-run.

"Disappointed--305 is Better" 2010-01-09
By Running Mom (California)
I did a lot of research on both the 305 and 405 before I purchased the 405. The deciding factor was the price, I actually got the 405 cheaper than the 305. Also, since it was the newest unit, I thought it might be better than the 305--I was wrong!

I used the 405 for over a year and had problems with it from the start. First, let me say I read the manual and sat with the device customizing it--this took about 2 hours. Any time I wanted to change something on the watch, I had to pull out the manual and spend some time with the watch. The menus were difficult to navigate and not very intuitive. I had my husband, a computer geek, try it out and even he was frustrated. As many reviewers have stated, the device doesn't work with wet/sweaty hands. This was incredibly frustrating when I needed to know what time it was and couldn't get off the training screen. I'd often forget to lock the bezel after I started my run, then my shirt would touch the watch and the timer would stop or flip to another screen--which I couldn't change (wet hands). I can't tell you how many runs didn't get recorded. When the watch worked, I did like the data it provided and it seemed to synch up with the satellites quicker than my 205. It also had less erroneous data and worked better under tree cover.

I usually run 3 specific days in a week, so I could plan ahead and make sure the watch was charged the night before. This was ok as long as I was never spontaneous, then the watch was often dead when I wanted to run. I almost had my Forerunner 205 repaired to use as a backup watch when I found the 305 dead. An On/Off switch is such a valuable feature! Yes, this watch is smaller than the 305, but as a woman, it's still too big for me to wear on a daily basis. The ANT stick worked on and off. I finally resorted to having my husband call Garmin's technical support and after an hour or so on the phone, they finally were able to get it to work. The bezel got to the point of only working from time to time with dry hands, so I gave the watch to my husband to see what he could do with it. He asked me why I had put up with this watch for such a long time given all the problems and frustrations I had with it. That was what I needed, I bought the 305. The 305 is bigger and heavier and tends to slide around a bit on my wrist, but since I wear it only for running, I can bear it. The data seems as reliable as the 405 and synchs up in about the same amount of time. The biggest advantage for me is the On/Off switch. I know how much battery life is left at the end of a run and I know that is how much will be there when I start the next run--no guessing! I've customized the screens and can easily navigate between them at a touch of a button. I don't worry about losing the small ANT stick anymore when I travel, as the charger/data cable is larger. The watch actually works like you would expect--WELL!

For me, the 305 is a much better device than the 405.

"The best" 2010-01-07
By J. sliger (Idaho)
This watch is just what I wanted for my marathon training. It helps to keep a great record of all my runs and the times to help me improve. I really like this watch, it is everything and more than they said.

"Camoflaged excellence" 2009-12-25
By gadget man (TEXAS)
Appearing to be the common $49 jogging watch, this Garmin does more. The GPS is the extra that costs $2000 on a car and so much less on this watch. Fantastic for the distance jogger or the walker who gets disoriented :) Recommend for the guy who wants everything at his finger tips.

All Reviews

The F6's coded transmission prevents crosstalk with other monitors so you'll get a personalized workout--even in a class environment. It's packed with innovative training features to help you toward your exercise goals, including:

The F6 displays your heart rate, exercise time, and average heart rate.

Zone Pointer: A visible and audible feature on the display of your heart rate monitor showing your target heart rate zone and where your current heart rate is within that zone.

Polar OwnCal: This feature shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. You can set daily and weekly exercise goals in terms of calorie expenditure with the OwnCal feature. Because the OwnCal tracks both the energy expenditure during one exercise session and the accumulated kilocalories during a longer time e.g. one week, it helps in achieving both short term and long term goals.

Polar OwnZone: This feature guides you through an appropriate warm-up routine and automatically determines a safe and effective exercise heart rate zone--your OwnZone--while taking into account your current physical condition.

Polar OwnCode: This technology blocks unwanted signals from other heart rate monitors, ensuring disturbance-free transmission of your heart rate data.

The Fitness Bullets feature shows a bullet on the monitor's display for every 10 minutes spent exercising/training in your target heart rate zone. The Time in Target Zone feature calculates the amount of total exercise time spent in your personal target zone. You can use this feature together with the Total Exercise Time to determine the effectiveness of your exercise program. You can also better assess your training data using the included Polar Precision Performance (PPP) 4.0 software and the SonicLink feature, which wirelessly uploads exercise settings to the software or to Polar's web service.

  Other features include:

Display of heart rate, exercise time and average heart rate

24-hour clock with day/week indicator and stopwatch

Large easy-to-read display with split screen

One-year average battery life

Water resistant to 30 meters (100 feet)

  Manufacturer's Warranty
The original purchaser of this heart rate monitor is backed by a limited warranty that states that this product that the product will be free from defects in material or workmanship for two years from the date of purchase.

  About Polar
The first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor was invented by Polar back in 1977 as a training tool for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski Team.

"Love it, when it works" 2010-01-13
By Sonya Meyers (Florida)
I bought this watch as a tool to help me through my long runs. I was very happy, a nice looking watch to monitor my heart rate, and it came with free shipping.

What I didn't like is that about 33 days into ownership of the watch, it became unreliable. It worked sporadically, and was inaccurate giving me readings that were completely off. I contacted amazon about a return, but I was outside of the 30 days and they sent me to the manufacturer (rightfully so). I had to send it to the manufacturer and wait 2 solid weeks.

On the return, the manufacturer stated that the battery was flat (dead), and that the transmitter had low conductivity of electrodes (aka: didn't work). I would say this was a "lemon" but I have heard and read that this has happened to others, I didn't think it would happen to mine.

They fixed it and were fine to work with, but I was discouraged that my "free ship" really was not a free ship after all, I had to pay to ship the watch to the manufacturer. My thought is you might want to learn how long your watch has been sitting in the box before receiving it. The only place to fix this watch is thru the manufacturer.

When the watch works, it's great. I am hoping to build confidence now on the reliability of this watch.

"So far, so good!" 2010-01-10
By Staci Gadacz (Indiana)
I received the women's Polar F6 in black about a week ago. I've only used it twice, but so far am very pleased with the ease of use and also the ease of set up. I feel as though it gives a pretty accurate read out on heart rate and calories burned, based on what I've read and seen. The watch face is a little big for my liking, but it's manageable. I used it on my run this morning and it was the motivation I needed to push myself a little harder, but still in my safe heart rate zone, for a better work out. I haven't used it in the pool yet, but supposedly it is safe to do so. Overall, would recommend this product. I'm not a complete die hard athlete, but it is more than enough of a "gadget" for someone who runs and uses it for spin classes!

"Excellent product but one complaint" 2010-01-10
By Alyssa Lindsey
I got the F6 in June for my birthday and I love it. Since then I used it for running, cardio, weight lifting, etc. I have been in very crowded classes and it never got interference from other HRMs. The watch is very comfortable and does not get in the way too much, although when doing squats and clean and presses it can dig into your wrist. I use it basically to keep track of my heart rate, time my workouts, and monitor calories burned, so it is perfect for these tasks. My only complaint is the chest strap. I recently got a Garmin forerunner for Hanukkah and when I started using that for running I realized the difference. Their chest strap is so much more comfortable and secure. The F6 often slides down as I get sweaty, even though I have it on the tightest setting, so I don't know what those smaller than me would do. It even fell off while I was running a half marathon. However, as I said, that's my only complaint - I would still recommend this product.

"The F6 Completely Changed The Way I Exercise" 2010-01-06
By Marz (Oregon)
The Polar F6 is a fine piece of equipment and there is no doubt about it. It's so useful, giving you access to a host of physical statistics and it's incredibly easy to use. Will the F6 help you with your fitness goals? You bet it will. There is no doubt that it will add a new dynamic to your workouts.

In short, you will wonder why you ever waited so long to get one!

**BTW, the battery is a snap to change and I'll tell you how in a minute.

After you have entered your personal stat's like height, age, etc. your F6 will tell you how long you have exercised, heart rate, calories you have burned and how many your are burning per hour, how many calories you have burned for the entire week of exercises or however many sessions you choose to total. You can also review stored exercise sessions individually all via the Diary function.

The F6 can calculate varying BPM zones for you to work within via the OwnZone function or you can set them yourself. The F6 monitors your BPM and Alarms and arrows go off when you are too high or low.

Here is the part I love. You can use the sonic Uplink to transmit all of your diary information from the wrist unit, through your PC mic, to the website [...] and monitor your progress over time, set up goals and see how well you are achieving them. There is a lot more you can do there as well. Have a look at the site.

**I've read some of the bad press on here concerning changing the batteries in the wrist unit. I changed mine, no problem, and I feel confident that it is still water proof and I'll tell you why. Just a quick note though that for me it doesn't matter because I don't use the unit while in the water.

Purchase a CR 2032 3V battery. Take the four screws out of the back using a tiny phillips head screwdriver created for this type of thing. Once you take the back plate off you will notice a little gasket that sits inside a groove that runs just inside the circumfrence of the back of the watch.

When you have replaced the battery you will want to be very sure and carefully push this gasket into that groove to retain the water proofing. Could it still leak? Maybe, but that is your best bet if you are going to change the battery yourself. I feel pretty confident that, so long as the gasket is in good condition and it is pushed into it's groove, then it will not leak.

With the back off, you will notice that the battery is visible and a small metal arm is holding it in place with an even smaller bent metal piece that fits over a plastic bump. The metal slips down over the plastic bump and clips into place. Use you're your screwdriver (I use a tiney straight edged screwdriver for this) to lift the metal piece over the plastic bump. Once the arm is released the battery should slip out of it's housing.

Slip the new battery in, + side up, and reverse the previous steps.

You're done. It even has your old information still saved.

I love this thing. I'm very happy with it's performance and use it all the time.

"Good, but easy to get dirty" 2010-01-05
By Fernando (Costa Rica, Central America)
So far so good with this Polar. The only issue right now is that the belt got dirty the very first day. A sweater that hasn't stained any other watch or accessory, stained the Polar belt. My wife is really disappointed with that. We tried everything to get the stain out with no success. Other than that, it's a good product.

All Reviews

Product Description

The F6 is a stylish model with advanced features previously found on products over $150.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Polar F6 heart rate monitor is a great choice for using in large groups where other exercisers might be using wireless training gear that could interfere with your own signal. The F6's coded transmission prevents crosstalk with other monitors so you'll get a personalized workout--even in a class environment. It's packed with innovative training features to help you toward your exercise goals, including:

I don't even find it necessary to wet the back of the chest strap as the directions indicate, it works great for me as soon as I put it on. I average running 4 - 5 miles per day, about 5 day a week. I have read that the battery life isn't great, but the batteries it uses are about $4 for a pkg of two so even if they don't last that long it isn't a big deal.

"You get what you pay for" 2010-01-07
By David R. Rehm (Salem, OR USA)
It could've received five stars from me except......I ordered this Timex model to replace an old Polar that I gave away. Should've kept the Polar. I gave the Timex three stars because the heart monitor works, and that's all I cared about. We tried setting the watch functions (four different smart people) and it refuses to be set. I don't give a hoot about the watch function, but it should work anyway. One star gone. There's also an annoying high-pitched beat from the monitor. (Hey, it matches my heart beat.) I can only hear it when I'm not moving around of course, but my old Polar never made a sound. This is somewhat subjective, but I take away another star anyway. The catch on the strap is not the most convenient, but I'll let that one slide. The unit only cost $33.00; the least expensive Polar I found was about $60.00. Best thing about the whole deal is Amazon Super Saver shipping---free, and it arrived in five days. If you want a no-frills basic heart rate monitor, this is an adequate product. If you want some real quality and want to swim with your monitor as well, go for a Polar product.

"Performs exactly as advertised." 2009-12-17
By W. Buckner (Virginia)
I was in the market for a heart rate monitor with chest strap that simply provided heart rate. I didn't need any other function than that. After searching local stores (big name and small) all I could find were wrist monitors (no chest straps) and all had far more functionality than what I needed, for more money than what I wanted to spend.

I researched these and the Timex was highly rated as just a simple heart rate monitor.

I have had the item for over a month now and it performs exactly as advertised and does everything I need it to do. Bonus for me is that the monitor's readings are picked up by the treadmills I run on so I don't always have to glance at the watch to see my heart rate.

For the money, if you are simply looking for a reliable heart rate monitor without all the gizmos, this one is for you.

"Chest strap" 2009-12-08
By JT
You are required to wear a strap around your torso. Graves (Mentor, OH USA)
Great tool to help me reach my target heart rate and maximize my cardio workouts. I recently started back on a workout routine and needed an inexpensive and easy to use heart rate monitor watch that would allow me to monitor my heart rate, handsfree, during my cardio work out at the gym. This watch has the basic funtionality that I need plus work out equipment at the gym picks up the signal and displays on the screen so I don't have to keep looking at my wrist.

This Reebok strapless heart rate monitor is one of the smallest on the market and allows the user to get accurate heart rate without having to use a chest belt.

Amazon.com Product Description

Specifically made for women, with its lightweight and slender design, this all-in-one heart rate monitor and sports watch by Reebok uses a patented method called "pulse technology" to measure the electrical pulses sent out by your heart each time it beats. Of course, the amazing part is that it works by finger touch rather than the cumbersome chest strap used by most other heart monitors. Within four seconds of touching the sensors on the watch, you can get not only an accurate heart rate reading, but also the number of calories burned during your workout.
The monitor has a programmable heart rate zone with audible and visual alarms to alert you when you get out of zone, plus a settable alarm if you have a maximum rate you should not exceed. Made from durable plastic and fully water-resistant, the device also features regular watch functions, plus a 100-hour stopwatch and countdown timer. It comes with a complete walking and exercise guide and one-year warranty.

  About Reebok
Reebok's United Kingdom-based ancestor company was founded for one of the best reasons possible: athletes wanted to run faster. So, in the 1890s, Joseph William Foster made some of the first known running shoes with spikes in them. By 1895, he was in business making shoes by hand for top runners; and before long his fledgling company, J.W. Foster and Sons, developed an international clientele of distinguished athletes. In 1958, two of the founder's grandsons started a companion company that came to be known as Reebok, named for an African gazelle.

Similar Products

Customer Reviews

"um... garbage technology" 2010-01-13
By -truetruth-
Big disappointment -- had to return item. The heart rate monitor only worked randomly, and the *lengthy* list of "hints" for what to do when it doesn't work suggests that the problem is in the technology itself. One of the "hints" for getting a reading is to "stay still, and relax your arms on a stable surface while taking your heart rate." Gee, interrupting my workout to stay still and relax my arms on a stable surface is not exactly what I bought a fitness heart-rate monitor for.

Looks like I'm back to the cumbersome chest-strap model. At least it actually works.

"Decent, but does NOT take continuous measurements" 2010-01-06
By Marjorie Chardin
Overall, this is a decent little watch that does the trick without needing a cumbersome chest belt. However, there are two big drawbacks that aren't entirely clear from the product description. First, this will not continuously take your pulse -- it only measures your heart rate each time you press the buttons. Second, this downside further impacts the calorie counter. Once activated, your calories burned hinges entirely on your last calculated heart rate and so does not account for fluctuations in activity unless you continuously check your heart rate (not ideal if jogging quickly on a treadmill; riding a "real" bike; or using an elliptical where both arms are needed). Now going back and re-reading the description, I see "hints" of these downsides -- but as a first time buyer, I didn't put it all together until after I put this watch to use. But then again, if I got all this watch offered AND had the ability to continuously monitor pulse and calories, the product probably wouldn't be so modestly priced.

"I'm a Little Disappointed" 2009-12-23
By E. Chow (New York, NY)
I received this watch about seven weeks ago and was very happy with it until the blue backlight came on two days ago and would not turn itself off; the extra power consumption has worn down the battery. Even though I did not expect this Reebok Fitwatch 10S Strapless Heart Rate Monitor Watch (Blue) to do a whole lot, especially not for thirty-something dollars, I expected it to last a lot longer than two months.

Pros: 1) It gives a good ballpark of my heart rate; 2) it's water-resistant so I can wear it when swimming; 3) you can program it to give you your target heart range; 4) it's not important to me but it was nice to have a calorie-burning function.

Cons: 1) it's rather bulky- it's a problem when I wear long-sleeved clothes, and I have to take it off whenever I get on the computer; 2) the number of calories burned is based on the last reading you did, so if your last heart rate measurement was, say, 150 bpm, the calorie-burning feature bases its numbers on the 150 bpm, not your current rate; 3) the backlight came on and stayed on.

Overall, it did what I wanted it to do, which was to measure my heart rate and is water-resistant. It would have been nice if it did it for a lot longer than two months. I am getting an exchange, so I'll see if the new one does the same thing.

"Metal buckle sliced right through strap - now useless!" 2009-12-18
By eview99 (Everywhere. The Matrix)
I loved this watch/monitor. But after just a few uses, the pin attaching the buckle to the plastic strap just sliced right throught the plastic! Imagine butter and a knife, and you'll understand the effect of what happened. This is completely useless now. No idea how they could design such a weak piece of plastic to support a metal pin. That was [...] bucks down the drain!

"Unhappy with product" 2009-12-18
By tgrins (nc)
I am very unhappy with this watch. I bought it specifically for the calorie counter and heart rate monitor. The heart rate monitor works sometimes when I am not working out and NEVER when I am working out. When I check the heart rate it will just kick back and show me what time it is. Yeah it says to wet your fingers and try again, lower your wrist below your heart, wait 3 minutes and try again...bla bla bla. When you're at your peak you want to know where your heart rate is. Not 3 minutes later after you are cooling down. I know that I burn at least 1,300-1,500 calories during my back to back spin/strength training class and my watch states that I burn less than 1 calorie per minute?? REALLY?? Come on!! I would really like my money back. I bought it because it was inexpensive and had decent reviews, but I guess you get what you pay for sometimes?? My spin instructor bought the same watch from Amazon and she is having the same exact issues. Guess it's not just me....

All Reviews
All Timex heart rate monitor sensors have batteries that can be replaced by consumers without requiring them to be returned to the manufacturer.

Similar Products

Customer Reviews

"Great HRM" 2009-12-28
By I. A. M. Apollo
As far as HRMs go, this is probably one of the better ones. The strap is comfortable, it is easy to use, and is a good way to start interval training. One reviewer claims to go through batteries like crazy, I have not found this. If you are considering learning your heart rate while working out, get a watch like this one with the strap, then you won't have to stop your workout to see your heart rate. My only issue is now I want to log my workouts and save them to a computer so I will have to upgrade!

"Better Value Alternative to Polar and Suunto" 2009-12-27
By Brad Vance (Boston, MA USA)
I owned a Timex HRM before this one and it lasted a full three years being used 3 or 4 times a week. The sensor strap cracked and the sensor was shorted out. I didn't hesitate to buy a second Timex this time around (unlike Polar and Suunto, you cannot just buy a replacement sensor). Women may find the chest strap sensor uncomfortable to wear and should take a look at Polar which has a soft fabric sensor strap which may help. I am very satisfied with the performance and features and the price makes it an excellent value. To get similar features in Polar or Suunto you have to spend 2-3 times as much.

"Very good HRM!" 2009-12-23
By N. Li

Been use it for about a month now, have everything that I needed for a heart rate monitor, very good!

only complain I have is that you have to manually reset the timer in order to start a new session recording. If you forget to reset it and already pressed the HR button you are not gonna get the data for this session, unless you remove the chest strap and start over again.

"Delivers As Promised" 2009-12-20
By simone
I bought this about a year ago and have used it consistently during that year. I teach at least five Spin classes a week. I use both the timer function and the heart rate monitor. The battery in my chest strap lasted a year. Unfortunately there is no battery indicator so I started class and switched on my heart rate monitor. After it failed to find my heart rate several times, I realized that the battery must be dead.

I am very pleased with this product. I am not a sophisticated user and I found this monitor easy to set up and use. Unless you've had a VO Max test, remember that this is just a rough guideline of your performance (for example, I've had mine read 115%). The chest strap is comfortable, especially if you can tuck it under something like a sports bra so it doesn't feel like it's slipping.

Here are the cons: there is no way to shut off the heart rate monitor. Even if you remove the chest strap, the watch continues to try to read your pulse and will continue to provide a reading (16% an hour after I've stopped). Readings after removing the chest strap does make me wonder how much interference I'm getting and how accurate the readings are but again, I just use this as a general guide.

When I work with kettlebells, sometimes the buttons get bumped and the watch switches to the secondary time setting or my timer starts. There are a lot of functions on this watch that I don't use and I would sacrifice some of those functions for buttons that aren't so easily activated.

"Not Easy to use" 2009-12-14
By James J. Todd (LA)
This is the 3rd heart rate watch I've bought, I had a Polar and a Nike, the Polar was great, very, very easy to use, the Nike was rubbish, and this one was supposed to be the best---but its very difficult to use (I mean anything besides the heart rate part)---recording workouts, the interface, and calories burned--are not clear. I still have not found out how to see Calories burned, and there is no indication of how to see calories burned in the instruction manual--even though it says that it calculates calories burned on the box and in the description.

As a heart rate monitor--it is very accurate, but for everything else it suffers with a poor, confusing interface--I don't even bother wearing it!

Amazon.com Product Description

Combining stylish looks with heart rate monitoring features, this larger Timex Personal Heart Rate Monitor watch (model T5G971) can be worn by both men and women. It features a chest strap heart rate monitor, easily accessible function buttons, durable resin case, and comfortable resin strap with a stylish tapered profile. For integrating heart rate monitoring into your training, this watch enables you to continuously track your heart rate during exercise as well as pre-set target heart rate zones with alarms that notify you when you are out of the zone. It also offers an automatic activity timer and a workout review that recalls activity time and average/peak heart rates. This streamlined watch also has a month/day/date display with 12/24-hour time.
The Indiglo night-light uniformly lights the surface of the watch dial using patented blue electroluminescent lighting technology. It uses less battery power than most other watch illumination systems, enabling your watch battery to last longer. The result of that research was the purchase of two of the Timex T5G971 monitor watches above... for my ever so wonderful and sexy wife and her goofy and not so sexy husband.

The things I like about this product are that the transmission of the heart rate signal from the chest band to the watch seems very reliable. Also, on the watch band there is a neat rubber "nub" that locks into the excess band left over behind the buckle to keep it from slipping out the the little loop and flopping about. I like being able to monitor average and immediate heart rates, as well as tracking the cooldown sequences.

What I don't like is that there didn't seem to be sufficient documentation with the watch explaining how to use the different functions. Maybe I'm dense, but more explicit step-by-step instructions would have helped me.

It doesn't look too bad, either, so I am comfortable just wearing it as just a watch. It also has a light to make reading it in the dark easier.

If you need something very sophisticated for marathoning, serious bicycling or the like, you should probably seek something with more data features. But for the average athlete or exerciser, this product does a great job at a very reasonable price.

Take care and good luck on your New Year's Resolutions!

"Timex T5G971 Personal Heart Rate Monitor Watch" 2009-12-30
By C. L. Becker (New Jersey)
Never having had experience with a heart rate monitor, I was looking for something simple and not too expensive. I read the Amazon.com reviews and CR's high rating, and chose the Timex for both functionality and price ($45 on Amazon vs $70 from Timex). The watch performs as advertised. It's necessary to thoroughly wet the monitor itself before exercising and the watch reports all of the information I wanted, including a warning when heart rates fall below or go above desired levels. It also has a handy heart rate recovery feature over a one-minute period which is useful for cardio training.

"This is for small people only." 2009-12-28
By P. Muller (Sacramento, CA USA)
This product is for small to medium-sized people only. I wear a 44 coat, and it would not fit around my chest. I should have paid more attention to the reviewer who mentioned this fact. Why a company like Timex would fail to mention this is puzzling at best.

All Reviews
Knowing your heart rate is important because if you're working out too hard, your activity can actually become counter productive and strain or damage muscles.

Monitor your heart rate with Omron's HR-100C. In general, the proper level falls between 65 percent-85 percent of your maximum heart rate. To ensure you don't drop above or below your proper level, the HR-100C is built with an alarm option that indicates low and high heart rates.
Omron includes a chest transmitter belt with the wristwatch-style monitor. This transmitter sends data to the receiver on your wrist at a distance up to 98 feet (30 meters). The HR-100C is built with a backlight function for exercising after nightfall, and it also displays time of day and a daily reminder alarm feature. Also included is a mounting bracket that makes it easy to attach the watch receiver to most treadmills and bicycles and a soft, zippered storage case.

     What's in the Box
HR-100C hear rate monitor, chest transmitter, mounting bracket, and zippered storage case.

Q&A - Fitness Monitors

What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method?
Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) is considered one of the most accurate and accessible methods of screening body fat. Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues having a high water content that conduct electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The monitor sends an extremely weak electrical current through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. The weak electrical current is not felt while operating the Body Fat Analyzer. The monitor is calculated by a formula that includes five factors; electric resistance, height, weight, age and gender.
What is visceral fat?
Visceral fat is located around the organs. Too much visceral fat is thought to be closely linked to increased level of fat in the bloodstream, which can lead to common conditions such as high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Sedentary life style causes excess visceral fat, and exercise can reduce it quicker than subcutaneous fat (fat located under skin).
What is resting metabolism?
Resting metabolism is the energy to maintain vital functions and it counts 60 to 70% of total energy consumption. Knowing your resting metabolism can help your dietplan. If you can increase daily activity while keeping food intake at resting metabolism level, you can lose weight.
What is skeletal muscle?
Skeletal muscle is muscle attached to the bones that is used to move the body. If you do weight loss without exercise, you may lose skeletal muscle. Skeletal muscle is important to maintain your resting metabolism as well as your functionality. Garross (Seattle)
After reading several of the previous reviews, I decided to give this HR monitor a try. It was a great decision. I find myself working harder at the gym. I've always wetted the sensors per instructions and have yet to have a problem with it working. It works perfectly with the gym equipment! No more trying to hold the sensors while running on the treadmill. Yipee! It doesn't have all the features of more expensive monitors but for someone like me that just wants to stay in the correct zone for a great workout, it's perfect.

"User friendly product" 2010-01-01
By M. Kelekci
I purchased it a couple months ago and use it daily. I needed a basic heart rate monitor without all the fancy features.

It is easy to use and seems accurate all the time.

BTW I found out that all the work out equipment at the YMCA that I go to pick up the signal from chest strap, so I do not have to even wear the watch when I work out at Y.

Recommend it to everybody.

"Works great" 2009-12-30
By D. Stewartgriesser
This is my first heart rate monitor, so I really don't have anything else to compare it to, but it works great! Will really help your training by keeping you in your target HR zone. Very easy to use. I was able to use it right away with very little set-up. It's a little complicated (not too bad) to set up the watch mode, and I really wouldn't use it as a watch. The heart rate mode is what you are using it for anyway, and that works great.

"AT Last!" 2009-12-28
By Amanda Fitton
This Omron heart rate monitor does it all and does it simply. The others I have owned require the skills of a programmer to get the desired results. With this instrument you can have as many or as few functions as you wish with a minimum of fuss.

"Heart Rate Monitor" 2009-12-24
By Frederick L. Peterson (Denver, PA)
I was happy with the monitor. It's measurements were consistent and stable. I was surprised that it also was a wrist watch.

All Reviews
